Dr. Gareth Churcher

Gareth was born in Falmouth in 1983 and has a flourishing career as a conductor and composer, most notably in the world of brass and voice.

 
Gareth began learning the trombone and piano at the age of 5. He has enjoyed great successes as principal trombone of the St Keverne Band. During his time with the youth band, they secured 3 victories at the National Finals, and gained 2 BBC Youth Band of the Year titles.
 

Gareth has always had a great interest in composition, and completed a licentiate diploma with the Trinity College of London. Following this, he became successful in gaining a Masters of Fine Art with Falmouth University, specialising in composition.

Gareth has a real passion and enthusiasm for teaching, and began teaching for Music Cornwall, which was a council run music service. Following the demise of Cornwall Council’s own music service, Gareth devised his own model – the Cornwall Music Service Trust, for which he is the founding Head of Service.
 
Gareth has been anointed as a Cornish Bard as a ‘True Ambassador for Music’, and has also been awarded the Trelawney Plate for outstanding services to Cornwall. In 2018, Gareth was appointed as the new artistic director of the International Male Voice Choral Festival, the largest event of its kind in the world.
His compositional works have been performed locally, nationally, and internationally, by several big names in the brass banding world. Gareth’s works are highly sought after, with some of his test pieces having been selected for contests at a national level.
 
Gareth was appointed as musical director for Camborne Town Band in August 2023. Following several successful summer concerts, Gareth’s first outing on the contest stage with the band was at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall. He led the band in a fine performance, achieving 13th place up against the country’s finest brass bands.
